The Bitcoins keep going up and up and up, Omotenashi & VR 🌿 🐼 🌐 #40

Loads of fascinating developments have happened since I last wrote, including two blockchain tech conferences (Ethereal and Devcon) as well as bitcoin prices going through the roof (US$7,343 /AU$9651 when writing this) and masses of mainstream media attention. This new tech is really starting to touch our lives.

And another rocket went up and down.

How lucky we are to witness these happenings. This time is amazing.

Connecting humans to machines – it’s coming. Putting my order in for wings and flight now.

Winning Newsletters

While enjoying the Wilsons’ newsletters (Fred and Joanne), I’ve ‘gotten’ a bit more of why they’ve written regularly for so long.

The thing is, you can start a newsletter for business development, marketing, self expression and other reasons and my recent experience is there’s more to this regular activity.

Here’s an update on what I’ve noticed:

  • Each fortnight I’ve the opportunity to get onto ‘paper’ what’s currently on my mind that’d be useful to others.
  • As more peers, colleagues, people in my network, friends and family show interest in new business and life opportunities (such as blockchain tech and cryptocurrencies), I can easily forward previous emails knowing they include easy to pick up introductory links after I’ve distilled much reading.
  • I’ve a timeline of my interests since I started writing. I like this.
  • It’s fun to engage. People send fascinating and lovely replies.
  • My writing and choice of subjects has (naturally) refined as have my systems (for example, collating links throughout the fortnight in one place) and use of tech such as Mailchimp’s new editing feature on their smartphone app.
  • Having written each fortnight for a year and a half, I’ve a fun sense of achievement and I’m a bit in awe!
  • I’ve published previous emails on LinkedIn and gain comments there. My Linked profile (online resume / CV) shows more of my expertise, interests and style. Opportunities have come from this and possibly I appear in more (relevant) LinkedIn searches.

It’s a great use of time. Maybe you will try it?

Deep Work

Hi from Torquay, overlooking the waves rolling in. I’m freshly inspired from listening to Cal Newport’s “Deep Work”. These words are interesting:

“In this new economy, three groups will have a particular advantage: those who can work well and creatively with intelligent machines, those who are the best at what they do, and those with access to capital.” 

“To remain valuable in our economy, therefore, you must master the art of quickly learning complicated things. This task requires deep work.
If you don’t cultivate this ability, you’re likely to fall behind as technology advances.”

Cal’s book is fascinating with quickly actionable tips and this is a great list by Ryan Holiday on how he does deep work. Fascinating.

Things getting too heavy?

“Piaggio recently unveiled the company’s first product, a personal cargo robot named Gita. The bot can carry up to 40 pounds autonomously using maps, or by following a human operating the bot’s path… It’s fast enough to keep up with you on a bike (22MPH), and [has] the “human agility” needed to navigate sidewalks.” via Peter Diamandis

Gita and other helpful-to-humans technology excites me! You too?

 

Self-driving cars: coming sooner

Recently in conversations I’ve suggested we’ll use self-driving cars sooner than expected, for a couple of reasons:

  1. With so many other things to do, see, read, watch, catch up on (including sleep), car driving will start to be less of interest compared to other things we could do.
  2. As more images of newly designed car interiors (movie cinema, sleeping pod, working space / shared office) appear the idea of the car being a location to do other things than drive will grow on us… quickly.

Automation and employment

This graph shows job titles and their probability for automation. It’s worth reading the sidebar too. It’s from this month’s Oxford University and Citibank Report (good article to read).

I’ve also recently heard the entrancing term the “post-work economy”. Universal Basic Income anyone? What do you think?

8 Changes to your LinkedIn Account

1. Focus

Be clear!

  • Who do you wish to reach?
  • What do you wish to achieve through using Linkedin?
  • Clarify your rules for accepting an invitation.
  • State how much time you’ll dedicate to Linkedin each week.

Use Linkedin as a tool rather than being on it for hours!

2. Make contact easy!

Make sure your email and website details are clear. Create a unique link to your Linkedin profile.

3. Make an impression!

Add that fabulous headline and photo! Jam-pack your Summary & Experience section with the things you are proudest of that’ll connect with those you want to attract. Keep it succinct! Add words your target reader will search for. Once saved, check the organisation’s logo appears.

4. Add extra sparkle

Inspire your reader with additional information in these sections: Education, Volunteering Roles, Additional Organisations (especially if you’re a Member or Fellow of an organisation), Certification (remember that Management course you did last year?), Publications, Projects, & Donors & Awards (include internal awards even if they’re small!). Rename courses (within reason!) for people to quickly understand.

5. Help your customers check in

In Skills, add words that your target reader will search for. Most important skills at the top. Use customer- and industry-relevant words to describe what you do and your value. So exciting! Delete irrelevant skills (e.g. Microsoft Word for more senior people).

6. Polish your shoes

Brief your colleague / friend on who you wish to attract and have them review and provide feedback on your profile. Make sure spell check is complete and formatting is consistent. You’re looking fine!

7. Greet those you know

Connect your address book to Linkedin. Make sure it includes email addresses of your current and previous customers, colleagues, suppliers, business partners and clients for the clever Linkedin elves.

8. Create Linkedin Karma

Acknowledge people in your team publicly after finishing a project via Linkedin recommendations & often it’ll be reciprocated. Ask high profile leaders and influential people in your industry to provide you a recommendation, provide them with an example.

9. Tweak your settings

Turn off most email notifications. Leave important ones on!

10. I like this profile…

Create a bit of mystery in your profile so people will want to know more 🙂
